Presentation of the AVITEM

An agency whose purpose is to ensure a sustainable urban and territorial development in the Mediterranean area.

The Agency for Sustainable Mediterranean Cities and Territories (AVITEM) was created in 2012 after a Mediterranean Union meeting about urban sustainable development. It is a Public Interest Grouping (GIP) in which the State is involved (Commissariat Général à l’Egalité des Territoires, Ministère des affaires Etrangères et du développement international, Ministère de l’Education nationale, de l’enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche), as well as regional authorities (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Métropole Nice-Côte d’Azur regions) and the public organisation Euroméditerranée.

Fostering feedback exchange regarding experience, expertise, formation and cooperation, AVITEM aims at promoting integrated and reference approaches of urban and territorial development between French operators and other countries that are part of the Mediterranean Union.

This mission focuses on four priorities:

    • A cooperation system that allows the setup and coordination of these integrated and model approaches of urban and territorial development in the Mediterranean region.
    • An advanced study programme in projects engineering focusing on urban and territorial matters, open to both public and private decision-makers from the Mediterranean countries.
    • A place dedicated to meetings and debates, in the dynamics of capitalisation, where concepts may arise, good practices may be shared, and questions regarding building and territories development may be answered.
    • An expertise centre at the disposal of its members, working in partnership with all operators involved in urban and territorial development in the Mediterranean area.
